The London Evening Standard is to become a free paper in a surprise move that threatens the future of the London Lite free newspaper.
By Amanda Andrews, Media Editor, The Telegraph, 02 Oct 2009

The decision by Alexander Lebedev, the new Russian owner of the 182 year old paper, Evening Standard, is designed to increase its circulation in the UK capital from 250,000 to more than 600,000 a day and comes into effect on October 12.
The move is the latest twist in London's newspaper battle and reflects the financial pressures on the newspaper industry. The London Paper, a London freesheet owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, has closed, and today the owners of the London Lite said that all options for it are being considered.
Mr Lebedev is a former KGB officer who bought the loss-making title from the Daily Mail and General Trust eight months ago. The newspaper currently costs 50p.
