Travcom’s June Event - – all about book publishing and travel books in particular.

You’re invited to our mid-winter Travcom event

Our speakers on the night:

TRACEY BORGFELDT has been Associate Publisher with David Bateman Ltd www.batemanpublishing.co.nz for over 10 years, and was editor there for 10 years prior to that (with a brief stint in medical publishing). Bateman’s are one of New Zealand’s largest independent publishers, producing around 20-25 books a year for the local and international markets, with a focus on adult non-fiction books, particularly highly illustrated books. A few years ago, narrative non-fiction titles were added to the mix, including travel books. Last year Bateman published Ian Robinson’s Tea with the Taliban, the Travcom Travel Book of the Year winner in 2011. Along with looking out for great books to publish, Tracey is also currently grappling with e-books and the opportunities they present for authors and publishers.

JILL WORRALL is an award winning New Zealand writer with a passion for travel. Having worked as a journalist for more than 20 years, she made the decision to specialise in travel writing in 2004. She has a special love for the Islamic world and has visited and led tour groups to Syria, Libya, Jordan and Central Asia along with journeys to very diverse parts of the world including Bhutan, India, the Caucasus and Cuba. She has visited Iran seven times, and to research her latest book Two Wings of a Nightingale, Persian Soul, Islanmic Heart she travelled over 8000km on one trip alone. Jill has won two Qantas Media Awards for feature writing, and has twice been named NZ Newspaper Travel Writer of the Year and NZ Travel Writer of the Year.

IAN ROBINSON is this year’s winner of the Travel Book of the Year Award with Tea With the Taliban, published by David Bateman publishers.
Robinson has been a previous winner of this award.  His book Gantsara, alone across Mongolia won the 2005 Whitcoulls Travel Book of the Year Award which tells the story of Ian’s fascinating, often hilarious, sometimes terrifying solo horseback journey across outer Mongolia.  He became the first Westerner to cross the country in this way, spending seven months in this remote, inhospitable land.  He also received a Highly Commended in 2007 for his book You Must Die Once.
