News from the Royal Society of Literature


RSL/Man Booker Masterclasses
Saturday 24 September: Candia McWilliam on memory and imagination. Venue: Stockbridge Library, Edinburgh.

Saturday 5 November: William Boyd on adapting words for the screen. Venue: Somerset House, London.

Each Masterclass will be three hours for a maximum of 14 people.  These may be established writers, or absolute beginners.  Classes cost £30. 
Booking opens on 25 July and closes on 15 August, after which selection will be made by ballot. Six places at each class will be reserved for Fellows and members of the RSL.  Applications (full name and which class you are applying for) should be made to Rachel Page, rachel@rslit.org or 020 7845 4677.

RSL Autumn 2011 Speakers

RSL Newly-Elected Fellows & Benson Medal Winners

At our AGM & summer party on 5 July we introduced this year's newly elected Fellows, many of whom were present to sign the Roll Book with their choice of Byron's pen or Dicken's quill.

New Fellows for 2010/2011:
Gilbert Adair, Kate Atkinson, Margaret Atwood, Carmen Callil, Miranda Carter, Peter Conradi, Alain de Botton, Imtiaz Dharker, Richard Eyre, Tobias Hill, Steve Jones, David Kynaston, Robert MacFarlane, Alberto Manguel, Philip Mansel, Stephen Romer, Kamila Shamsie and Elaine Showalter.

We also presented two Benson Medals - awarded to honour the whole of career of an author - to Diana Athill and Francis King.

V.S. Pritchett Prize Entries

Thanks to all of you who submitted short stories to the V.S. Pritchett Memorial Prize.

The winner will be announced at the V.S. Pritchett Short Story Evening on 14 November, and will have the opportunity to appear at the event with Adam Foulds and Rose Tremain.
