PICTURE YOURSELF IN UBUD

The main program of the Ubud Writers Festival 2011 is a banquet of literary tastes and treats, but to totally understand the entire Festival experience, we recommend the sensory overload that is an Ubud Writers & Readers Festival special event.
Picture this: the Alila Ubud resort perches high on the edge of the emerald Agung river valley and is a tranquil oasis of secluded courtyards, private gardens and traditional Balinese architecture. Boasting the most verdant views over the plunging valley is the Plantation Dining restaurant. Here you partake in one of the literary lunches for which the Festival is renowned. Conversation with authors Chris Abani and Mohezin Tejani will flow as they relate their out of African adventures accompanied by a feast of North African specialties, selected by legendary New Zealand chef-author, Peta Matthias,
Perhaps you’d like a little exercise to whet your appetite? Jalan-Jalan across the Tjampuhan Ridge with Brian Thacker, travel adventurer and writer, as he recounts tales of his journeys through Southeast Asia. Finish up at the staggeringly majestic Made Wijaya-designed Villa Keliki, enjoy a glorious brunch followed by a travel writing workshop to fine tune your writing skills.

If all these hot hot days and balmy nights are making you sway, you’re ready for Latin Rhythms. The festival celebrates our Latin authors from Cuba to Colombia in the plush lounge of the award-winning Mozaic restaurant. Sip on margaritas, graze on gourmet tapas, stare at the chandeliers and listen to the words of Junot Diaz, Juan Gabriel Vasquez, Edel Rodriquez and Marcelo Romero while the sun sets over Sanggingan. If you are not mesmerized, blame it on the Bossa Nova.

Now that we’ve introduced you to Mozaic, one of Ubud’s celebrated fine dining restaurants, why not learn how they create the magic? Join in an intimate demo-cooking class with Chef Chris Salans. Chris will introduce some of the recipes featured in his first book “Mozaic: French Cuisine, Balinese Flavours” in the exclusive surrounds of Mozaic’s private workshop / dining room. Learn the secrets and get behind the scenes of his literary work that combines the story of Chef Salans’ journey in Indonesia, his discovery of the island’s ingredients and the birth of Mozaic, Chef Salans’ award-winning restaurant.  Complemented with Mozaic-style recipes, his book introduces Balinese ingredients in depth and then suggests recipes.

The Ubud Writers & Readers Festival: bringing you memories you’ll never forget.
