Two presentations are being given next week about the
story behind and restoration of Thorndon’s historic Randell Cottage.
Originally built in 1865 the property was bought back at
auction by that first family’s descendants in the 1990s. It was restored and
put into trust for use as a writers’ residency by Wellington writer, Beverley
Randell, together with her husband, Hugh Price, and their daughter, Susan
Price. The cottage became the first dedicated writers’ residency in Wellington,
and the first for visiting international writers in the Southern Hemisphere.
Beverley is giving two talks next week about the history
and preservation of the cottage. The talks are part of a series of celebrations
to celebrate Randell Cottage reaching its tenth year as a residency for both
New Zealand and French writers. A collection of objects from the 1800s which
were found under the cottage during its restoration will be on display as part
of the talks.
The cottage is small, so space for these talks is

and an Open Day and Garden Party in early October.
