The Michael King Young Writers’ Programme is taking shape.
After our successful series of workshops for North Shore students earlier
this year, we had a workshop in central Auckland in May, featuring writers
Emily Perkins and Paula Green. Next month we have another workshop for
South Auckland students in association with the Manukau Institute of
Technology( MIT), featuring writers Robert Sullivan and Courtney Meredith.
We are fortunate to have the support and involvement of two
fabulous teachers of creative writing, Ros Ali and Jo Emeney, who are
helping to plan the programme and tutor at the workshops. Each workshop
caters for about 20 students, who are nominated by their schools because of
their interest and ability in creative writing. This year for the first
time, we are planning a print publication to showcase the work of the students
who have taken part in the workshops.
Named (at this stage) Signals, it will be launched at a
final event/workshop in October featuring Eleanor Catton, who will be the
resident writer at the time. We are in the process of setting up social
media opportunities for the students, as well. The young writers’ programme
has been funded by Creative New Zealand. We hope to be able to continue,
and even extend it in the next couple of years.
