TVNZ says a rumour Masterchef winner Chelsea Winter was given an extra fifteen minutes to finish the $100,000 contest's final challenge is incorrect - or at least incomplete.
"This is a ‘Chinese whispers’ thing that’s doing the rounds of social media at the moment. It’s not true," TVNZ spokeswoman Megan Richards told NBR ONLINE.
Ms Winter was given an extra 15 minutes to complete her final dish - but so was co-finalist Ana Schwarz.
Beyond rumours swirling on Facebook and Twitter, NBR ONLINE was told by a source close to production company Imagination, which made the series, that Ms Schwarz was aggrieved that Ms Winter had been granted an extension.
However, a statement from Imagination TV, forwarded by Ms Richards and crafted in consultation with the two finalists, confirms TVNZ's version of events:
The finalists were given three hours to produce the ‘tortuous trifle’ in the fourth challenge of the MasterChef NZ decider, the statement says.
It quotes Ms Winter and Ms Schwarz saying, “At the end of the three hours neither of us were in a position to plate up and present our trifles to a standard we were happy with. When the producers offered us both the same time extension to complete the challenge, we accepted."
Up for grabs was more than a mere trifle.
Ms Winter - a 28-year-old marketing executive with finance company Heartland NZ - took home more than $100,000 worth of prizes, including $20,000 worth of groceries from Countdown, F&P appliances, kitchenware from Stevens, a cookbook deal with Random House and a Skoda Octavia VRS sedan.

Today's kerfuffle caps an at times ill-tempered series, which will be chiefly remembered for final four contesting Tony Price ratting to the judges after Ms Winter and Ms Schwarz swapped ingredients during a challenge, breaking Masterchef rules.
Mr Price, seemingly unable to give up his crusade, told media this week that the judges handled the situation badly.
Judge Josh Emett could be seen on camera smirking as Mr Price dobbed in his fellow contestants, who were denied a reward challenge but not handicapped in elimination.

It was still a very entertaining series, at least, we enjoyed it, and it's the only sop this house gives to reality TV. And all the little dramas add to that. I would've been backing Ana as the winner going into last night, although, production values aside, from what was shown she did get rattled, and Chelsea won by keeping her cool.
Regarding all the contestants, I think the Fijian lady would've cleaned up in the final, and the only real surprise of the series was her going out so early.
Finally, I thought my hero, Rick Stein, was looking a little bit tired on it, perhaps the travel, and the producers should've used him far better (it was quite a coup to get him on surely).
So glad I don't watch TV :-)
